Cajeput oil is distilled from the leaves and branch tips of the cajeput tree, which belongs to the genus Melaleuca. The imposing evergreen wood is also called silver tree myrtle heath and reaches a height of 43 meters. It is primarily native to Southeast Asia.
The essential cajeput oil smells fresh, herbaceous, aromatic and slightly camphoraceous. One is reminded of eucalyptus, but lacks its sharpness.
It is proven to be antiseptic, antibacterial and fungicidal. It thus has a similar effect to the well-known tea tree oil, which also belongs to the myrtle family. Cajeput helps with skin problems such as acne, inflammation and psoriasis. The slightly warming character promotes soothing rubs and massages for gout, muscle stiffness, sciatica and lumbago. The pain-relieving property is also used for other complaints such as toothache and earache. The oil is also ideal for inhaling respiratory diseases, as it has an expectorant and antispasmodic effect.
