Ginger is a perennial herbaceous plant from the ginger family that grows to a height of 50 to over 150 cm. The well-known kitchen spice or medicinal drug and the essential ginger oil are obtained from the ginger rhizome by means of steam distillation. Originally native to India and China, ginger is now cultivated in numerous other countries with tropical climates.
The ginger oil smells pleasantly spicy with fresh citrus components. On the skin it has a warming, invigorating and stimulating effect and is therefore often used for massages against muscle pain. It is also very helpful for gastrointestinal complaints and can provide rapid relief in the event of nausea. It has a stabilizing and balancing effect on the psyche, lifts mood and has an aphrodisiac effect.
Caution: Essential ginger oil should not be used during pregnancy as it can promote labor due to its circulation-enhancing effect. In addition, it has a slightly phototoxic effect, i.e. increases the skin’s sensitivity to light and should not be applied to the skin before sunbathing. If overdosed, it may irritate the skin.
